THE PRICE OF LOVE: CHEDDI JAGAN
Before Allende, before Fidel, before Grenada, there was Cheddi. In 1953, Cheddi Jagan was the first democratically elected Marxist leader in the Western Hemisphere. Born in rural Guyana, Jagan moved to Washington, DC, in 1936 to attend Howard University as a dental student. Returning to Guyana with a degree in 1943, he would dedicate his life to the upliftment of the Guyanese people. In 1953, after winning the first Guyanese elections held under universal adult suffrage, Jagan and his Progressive People’s Party saw their government suspended by a British coup after just 133 days. Bitter divisions, Cold War politics, racial violence and CIA plots all conspired to bring down one man’s fight for the freedom of his people. THE PRICE OF LOVE: CHEDDI JAGAN features interviews with his children, Joey and Nadira; his sister Barbara; and his political rival, Hamilton Green, alongside incredible archival footage. This stirring documentary tells the story of a leader who put his people first and paid a price for his love. (Note adapted from Spirit of ‘38 Productions.) DIR/SCR Richard Vaughan.
