Special Features: Closing Night | Q&A with filmmaker Lucía Aleñar Iglesias | Post-screening reception sponsored by the Embassy of Spain
A sun-dappled summer in Mallorca is an idyllic dream for Spanish teen Cata (Zoe Stein) and her younger sister Eva (Martina García). Staying with their grandparents at their glittering seaside home, Cata passes the days swimming in the Mediterranean and the nights sneaking off with a cute Swedish boy. But when her grandmother tragically passes, Cata’s summer vacation takes an unexpected turn. Stricken by grief, she looks through her grandmother’s wardrobe and tries on a beautiful vintage red-and-white dress, uncovering a deep connection with the family matriarch. Cata starts to take on a new familial role, stepping into her grandmother’s shoes and finding profound sympathy with her still-mourning grandfather (Lluís Homar, BAD EDUCATION, BROKEN EMBRACES). Filmmaker Lucía Aleñar Iglesias’ impressive debut feature is an evocative drama, drawing tender parallels between memory and sorrow and underscoring the lasting reverberations between life and death.
