Polish freedom fighters go underground to escape German troops during the final stages of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising in Andrzej Wajda’s harrowing portrait of resistance. Wajda’s claustrophobic, nightmarish masterpiece employs haunting images to convey the fighters’ struggle as they journey through the city’s sewers. Based on true events, the film brought international acclaim for the director, winning a Special Jury Prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival. It is an evocative depiction of the Polish resistance movement and a heartbreaking account of strength, duty and hope in the face of insurmountable odds. (Note courtesy of DI Factory.)
