KHARTOUM
In 2022, Sudanese filmmakers Anas Saeed, Rawia Alhag, Ibrahim Snoopy Ahmad and Timeea Mohamed Ahmed partnered with British filmmaker Phil Cox to document the lives and dreams of five very different citizens in Khartoum: a civil servant (Majdi), a tea lady (Khadmallah), a resistance committee volunteer (Jawad) and two street boys (Lokain and Wilson). Soon, however, a civil war broke out that displaced over 10 million people, including these five participants. Escaping to East Africa, and still determined to share their stories, the intrepid group continued their innovative cinematic storytelling by combining animation, green-screen reconstructions, stark verité street realities and documentary “dreamscapes.” Premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, this modern, bold and personal take on documentary storytelling in sub-Saharan Africa captures the stark realism of one of Africa’s great cities as it is consumed by turmoil and war — and also demonstrates the unwavering hope of the Sudanese people to overcome.
