KATANGA: THE DANCE OF THE SCORPIONS

This adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” from celebrated Burkinabé director Dani Kouyaté is a bold retelling shot in evocative black and white. After a failed conspiracy against the crown, King Pazouknaam (Prosper Compaoré) names his cousin Katanga (Mahamadi Nana) as head of the armed forces. Conscious of the weight of this role, and pushed by his ambitious wife, Katanga consults a soothsayer to assure him of his mission. Reading the sands, the soothsayer tells Katanga that he will either succeed his cousin as king or die during a future coup. (Note adapted from Sudu Connexion.) DIR/SCR/PROD Dani Kouyaté, from the play “The Tragedy of Macbeth” by William Shakespeare. Burkina Faso, 2025, b&w, 114 min. In Mooré with English subtitles. NOT RATED
