AISHA CAN'T FLY AWAY
Aisha (Buliana Simon) is a 26-year-old Sudanese immigrant caregiver residing in Ain Shams, a Cairo neighborhood with a large African migrant community, which seeths with violent tension between the migrants and the local gangs. The horrors of her circumstances are exacerbated by a gangster (Egyptian rapper Ziad Zaza) blackmailing her into his criminal undertakings. This soon takes a physical and mental toil as Aisha begins to suffer from an invasive rash and is haunted in her dreams by an ostrich, turning her life into a waking nightmare. For his feature debut, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, filmmaker Morad Mostafa trains his camera on the plight of African migrants living in a world keen on exploiting their tragic situation.
