Set against the turbulent backdrop of postwar Italy, Luigi Comencini’s adaptation of Carlo Cassola’s award-winning 1960 novel follows a working-class teenage girl (Claudia Cardinale) torn between love and loyalty when her former partisan fiancé (George Chakiris) is arrested for murder during the chaotic days following the end of World War II. A long-overlooked master of Italian cinema, Comencini — the subject of a retrospective at last year’s edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato — engages in dialogue with postwar Italian cinema, while asserting a refined, expressive style that includes cinematographer Gianni Di Venanzo’s (8½, SALVATORE GIULIANO) beautiful chiaroscuro photography, as well as composer Carlo Rustichelli’s melancholy leitmotif. A commercial and critical success, BEBO’S GIRL features a remarkable early performance by Cardinale, whose restrained, introspective acting earned her the Nastro d’Argento for Best Actress from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists and signaled the emergence of a major cinematic presence.
