BLKNWS: TERMS & CONDITIONS
Winner, Best Documentary Feature, 2025 Gotham Awards
A feature-length extension of artist Khalil Joseph’s video installation work, BLKNWS: TERMS & CONDITIONS is an audiovisual compendium of the past, present and future of the Black experience. Inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois’ aspirations for an “Encyclopedia Africana” — a version of which was later completed by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Kwame Anthony Appiah — Joseph collates literature, archival footage and TikToks with personal memoir and scripted narrative for a dialectical collision of history, memory and possibility. In a carousel of personages and ideas, citations of O.J. Simpson appear next to Marcus Garvey, memes beside lectures, treasure theft in conversation with hip-hop. This shape-shifting assemblage centering Black freedom and creative community is at once a mirror, a magnifying glass and a kaleidoscope.
