NOUVELLE VAGUE in 35mm

Nominee, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, 2026 Golden Globe Awards; Nominee, Best Supporting Performance (Zoey Deutch), 2026 Film Independent Spirit Awards

A treat for cinephiles: Richard Linklater tells the story of the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s legendary film BREATHLESS in 1959, a low-budget, rule-breaking production that, against the odds, became a worldwide sensation that helped launch the French New Wave. Linklater’s daring foray into French filmmaking is a triumph of casting, with Guillaume Marbeck utterly convincing as the young Godard, Aubry Dullin as star Jean-Paul Belmondo and Zoey Deutch in fine form as American expat and co-star Jean Seberg, understandably exasperated at her novice director’s idiosyncratic approaches to shooting prep, rewrites and direction. The film is a making-of story with the proper amount of irreverence in its telling — events unfold without sparing the evident confusion and frustration cast and crew experienced on the set as Godard experimented (or maybe bluffed and blundered?) his way into changing cinema history. David Chambille’s cinematography beautifully captures the look and feel of Paris at the end of the ‘50s, and a host of young French actors portray nearly the entirety of the Cahiers du Cinéma set, who would go on to form the bulk of the New Wave pantheon, from Varda to Truffaut to Chabrol to Rohmer to Rivette. DIR Richard Linklater; SCR Holly Gent, Vincent Palmo Jr.; PROD Laurent Pétin, Michèle Pétin. France/U.S., 2025, b&w, 106 min. In French with English subtitles. RATED R
