THE VIRGIN OF THE QUARRY LAKE
[LA VIRGEN DE LA TOSQUERA]
It is the unbelievably hot, sticky summer of 2001 and, as the Argentine economy threatens to completely implode, broody teenager Natalia (Dolores Oliverio) is obsessing over the dreamy Diego (Agustín Sosa). In the outskirts of Buenos Aires, she flirts the only way she knows how, sending instant messages from an internet café. But Diego has his eye on Silvia (Fernanda Echeverría), a world-weary 20-something who takes Natalia and her friends under her wing, introducing them to a secret swimming hole. But as jealousy turns to fury, Natalia will have to manage her burgeoning emotions or face the supernatural consequences. Dazzlingly directed by Laura Casabé from a script by filmmaker Benjamín Naishtat, the film powerfully reveals the anxieties facing a nation and the looming storm raging inside Natalia. –Josh Gardner
