PITFALL (1948)

Special Features: 75th Anniversary. Intro by Film Noir Foundation founder Eddie Muller, host of TCM's Noir Alley, on Oct. 13

Postwar male malaise suffuses this pungent crime melodrama from émigré genre specialist André de Toth. Dick Powell stars as John Forbes, a dissatisfied family man sucked into an underworld quagmire after a fling with conflicted femme fatale Mona (Lizabeth Scott) spirals out of control. Newcomer Raymond Burr got his breakout part playing a sleazy private eye stalking Mona. With locations spanning the breadth of Los Angeles, from the ocean to Hollywood and downtown, PITFALL is an exemplary L.A. noir. (Note adapted from UCLA Film & Television Archive.) DIR André De Toth; SCR Karl Kamb, from the novel by Jay Dratler; PROD Samuel Bischoff. U.S., 1948, b&w, 85 min. NOT RATED
