PATHS TO PARADISE
Molly (Betty Compson) runs a tourist trap dive bar in a seedy corner of San Francisco. She and her gang make enough dough perpetrating light frauds to attract the attention of other con artists in the city, including the wily "Dude from Duluth" (Raymond Griffith). Love and larceny team up when these two thieves meet cute, then set their sights on a big score together. Although less remembered today than his comedic contemporaries like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Griffith, "the Silk Hat Comedian," was a major star in a string of classy Paramount comedies of the mid-1920s. Walter Kerr, author of "The Silent Clowns," rated him highly remarking, "Griffith seems to me to occupy a handsome fifth place — after Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd and Langdon — in the silent comedy pantheon." DIR Clarence Badger; SCR Keene Thompson, from the play "The Heart of a Thief" by Paul Armstrong; PROD Adolph Zukor, Jesse Lasky. U.S., 1925, b&w, 67 min. Silent with English intertitles. NOT RATED
