PATTERNS (1956)
Director Fielder Cook and writer Rod Serling reunited to adapt for the silver screen their critically acclaimed 1955 TV drama, a ruthless takedown of midcentury corporate culture that still resonates today. Van Heflin (3:10 TO YUMA, SHANE) stars as Fred Staples, a Midwestern transplant to his firm's corporate headquarters in the Big Apple. He strikes up a friendship with older co-worker William Briggs (Ed Begley, 12 ANGRY MEN), but soon realizes their cruel boss (Everett Sloane, CITIZEN KANE, THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI) plans to pit them against each other. Cinematographer Boris Kaufman (brother of MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA's Dziga Vertov) was fresh off an Academy Award® for ON THE WATERFRONT when he returned to his position behind the camera for another location shoot in New York City. DIR Fielder Cook; SCR Rod Serling, from his teleplay; PROD Jed Harris, Michael Myerberg. U.S., 1956, b&w, 83 min. NOT RATED
