THE LIFE OF CURAÇAO'S MUSICAL GENIUS RUDY PLAATE
Curaçaoan photographer and filmmaker Selwyn de Wind is on a journey to find out all that he can about Curaçao's famed "singing greengrocer" Rudy Plaate, one of the nation's most popular singer-songwriters, whose big hit "Atardi" has become his country's unofficial national anthem. But what happens when the subject suffers from dementia and is no longer able to tell his own story? Filmed over a four-year period, this inventive documentary traces the highs and lows of the life and work of music legend Rudy Plaate. Combining extensive archival footage with interviews from family, friends and other artists, plus beautifully rendered animated sections, ATARDI taps into the styles and heritage of Curaçao's musical evolution, illustrating how Plaate helped build the foundation for Curaçao's popular music culture with his unique sounds and melodies, his larger-than-life personality and his commitment to championing songs in the local Papiamento language. Official Selection, 2020 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and 2021 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. DIR Selwyn de Wind; SCR Wendy York; PROD Sulin Passial.
