MARX CAN WAIT

[MARX PUÒ ASPETTARE]
In this deeply personal documentary — both a portrait of one family and of mid-20th-century Italy at large — legendary Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio (FISTS IN THE POCKET, THE TRAITOR) explores the life and death of his twin brother Camillo, who took his own life in 1968 at age 29. What could easily have been a joyless, melancholy treatment of such tragic subject matter becomes something else in the hands of Bellocchio, who uses a family reunion in his northern Italian birthplace of Piacenza as a jumping-off point for a film that delves deep into his family history, 20th-century Italian politics and his brother's fascinating life — and, by extension, the lives of his surviving siblings, as well as his own work and personal history. Incorporating a rich trove of archival footage, excerpts from his expansive filmography and interviews with family members and friends — all characters worth exploring unto themselves — Bellocchio looks at the complex repercussions of his brother's death, while also presenting a courageous self-portrait, which is frank, revealing, humorous and abundantly self-aware. Official Selection, 2021 Cannes, New York, London and Busan film festivals. DIR/SCR Marco Bellocchio; PROD Beppe Caschetto, Simone Gattoni. Italy, 2021, color, 96 min.
