BEST IN SHOW
Snuggling up to watch the annual National Dog Show is now a sacred Thanksgiving tradition — a time to “paws for thought” and be grateful for the joy inspired by dogs everywhere. But did you know that Christopher Guest’s beloved “dogumentary” spoof BEST IN SHOW was the inspiration for the highest-rated doggie TV event of the year? The mockumentary takes an affectionate look at a certain breed of dog owner, the kind who raise their prized pets to compete in dog shows. An eccentric cross-section of dog lovers converges at the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show in Philadelphia to find out who will be this year’s top dog, among them Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Michael McKean, Fred Willard, Jennifer Coolidge, Parker Posey, Jane Lynch, Michael Hitchcock and John Michael Higgins. Back in 2002, Bethesda native Jon Miller, president of programming for NBC Sports, saw BEST IN SHOW and the cutest, most unlikely of all Thanksgiving sports-watching traditions was born. DIR/SCR Christopher Guest; SCR Eugene Levy; PROD Karen Murphy. U.S., 2000, color, 90 min. RATED PG-13
