It is Labor Day weekend, and happy-go-lucky drifter Hal (William Holden) is fresh off a freight train and looking for a brand-new start in life. A robust, handsome show-off, he has come to Kansas to seek work in the family granary of his old fraternity brother (Cliff Robertson). But despite his high hopes and expectations, these ambitious plans soon go awry when Hal’s sexual magnetism attracts every woman in town, including an alluring young beauty queen (Kim Novak), who just happens to be his fraternity brother’s girlfriend.
