Paul Thomas Anderson’s PHANTOM THREAD is a tale of creative obsession, amour fou and a titanic clash of wills, set in the haute couture fashion world of 1950s London. Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of his greatest performances as Reynolds Woodcock, a famed fashion designer much in demand among socialites, film stars and royalty. Haunted by the memory of his beloved mother and deeply attached to his steely sister and business manager, Cyril (Lesley Manville), the “confirmed bachelor” Reynolds has avoided long-term romantic relationships, instead moving from one short-term dalliance and temporary muse to another. Reynolds meets the waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps) at a restaurant near his country home and becomes smitten; after a whirlwind affair, he brings her home to his London townhouse. But soon, Reynolds’ moodiness, emotional detachment and obsession with work cause their love to wither, until the crafty and spirited Alma cooks up an unusually effective way to win back her lover’s heart.
