Akira Kurosawa: A Retrospective
October 17–December 3
One of the most influential filmmakers in the world, Akira Kurosawa wrote and directed some 30 feature films, all distinguished by an uncommon blend of artistic invention and significant entertainment value. Kurosawa enjoyed a nearly 50-year career in movies that remains unsurpassed in its sustained quality and achievement — perhaps the greatest win streak a filmmaker has ever had. This year, seven of his magnificent films — STRAY DOG (1949), IKIRU, THRONE OF BLOOD, YOJIMBO, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS, SANJURO and HIGH AND LOW — have been restored in glorious 4K and are presented in this series alongside a new 2K restoration of RED BEARD, a 2K restoration of RASHOMON and last year’s 4K restoration of SEVEN SAMURAI. In the words of fellow influential filmmaker Martin Scorsese, “The term ‘giant’ is used too often to describe artists. But in the case of Akira Kurosawa, we have one of the rare instances where the term fits. His films had an awe-inspiring power, physical and graphic. His indelible compositions seemed to have been burned into the screen. He defined a sense of possibility in movies.”
Halloween on Screen
October 24–31
Get in the Halloween spirit with AFI Silver’s annual celebration of scary movies! Highlights include our now-traditional presentation of F. W. Murnau's NOSFERATU with a brand-new score by the Anvil Orchestra, a very special Count Gore De Vol presentation of TREMORS (1990), the return of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (celebrating its 50th anniversary) with a live shadowcast by Bloody Mayhem Theatrical, a collection of spooky Looney Tunes shorts, a FRANKENSTEIN bonanza with screenings of the original 1931 film as well as THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and Tim Burton’s FRANKENWEENIE (2012), 30th anniversary screenings of Black horror canon classic TALES FROM THE HOOD and much, much more.
Silent Cinema Showcase
October 24–November 15
The Silent Cinema Showcase returns with another selection of newly restored screen classics and rare gems from the silent era. Silent filmmaking was an art form unto itself, one that sound films may have replaced but did not necessarily surpass. Join us for our annual showcase of silent cinema and meet some of the dedicated and talented musicians who bring these films to life with their inventive accompaniment, including Andrew Earle Simpson, Donald Sosin, Ben Model and the Anvil Orchestra (formerly Alloy Orchestra). We kick things off with our annual presentation of F. W. Murnau’s NOSFERATU on October 24, featuring a new score by the Anvil Orchestra, then present a selection of films from 1925 celebrating their 100th anniversary, plus much more!
Select screenings co-presented with the AFI Silver Classic Film Weekend (Nov. 6–9).

Hong Kong Cinema Classics
November 1–25
Having birthed Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, wuxia and kung fu, Hong Kong has long been the home of action cinema. As the swords and martial arts styles of the ‘60s and ‘70s gave way to hard-hitting stunt choreography, the Golden Princess Film Production company ushered in a new wave of gritty Hong Kong filmmaking in the mid-1980s. Golden Princess launched the careers of filmmakers John Woo and Tsui Hark, who pioneered the genre of “heroic bloodshed” films: movies concerned with duty, honor and brotherhood, often set against the never-ending war between cops and mobsters. Featuring breakout roles for international stars like Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, these long unavailable films finally return to the big screen courtesy of Shout! Studios and GKIDS in new 4K restorations sourced from the original camera negatives.
Lee Grant Centennial
November 1–25
Most movie lovers know Lee Grant as a brilliant actor with a distinguished career, which includes four Oscar® nominations, from her 1952 nod for DETECTIVE STORY to her win for SHAMPOO in 1976. Fewer actually know Grant for her work as a director, a path she initially pursued by enrolling in the inaugural class of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women. Behind the camera, Grant quickly turned to making documentary films, bringing to the screen real American stories covering issues and topics that are as powerful and relevant today as they were over 30 years ago — sex discrimination, the homeless, farmers’ rights and the transgender community. Her groundbreaking work in documentary film earned Grant a second Oscar® for her film DOWN AND OUT IN AMERICA. This series presents a mixture of Grant’s acclaimed work as both actor and director, showcasing the broad range of skills possessed by this singular artist.
