LOTR: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING in 35mm

Special Features: 25th Anniversary

The future of Middle-earth rests on the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it, but chance has placed it in the hands of a young hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring from his uncle Bilbo (Ian Holm) and steps into legend. A daunting task lies ahead for Frodo when he becomes the Ringbearer: to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom where it was forged. Peter Jackson revolutionized the epic fantasy genre with this first installment in his acclaimed LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Considerable praise and accolades have been heaped upon the films for their beautiful, expansive sets; the intricate weaponry, armor and creature designs by the Wētā Workshop; and the mammoth Wagnerian score by Howard Shore. But at the core of the films’ success is the titular Fellowship, comprising nine actors — Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean — who seem to have walked right out of the pages written by J. R. R. Tolkien to bring the characters to palpable life and make audiences cheer, laugh and weep as they battle against the purest evil. DIR/SCR/PROD Peter Jackson; SCR Philippa Boyens, from the novel “The Fellowship of the Ring” by J. R. R. Tolkien; SCR/PROD Fran Walsh; PROD Barrie M. Osborne, Tim Sanders. New Zealand/U.S., 2001, color, 178 min. RATED PG-13
