ONE HOUR WITH YOU (1932)
Special Features: New 4K Restoration | Introduction by film historian David Pierce | FREE for SCC members!
It is spring in Paris and romantic temptation is everywhere. A doctor (Maurice Chevalier) loves his wife (Jeanette MacDonald), but when her friend (Genevieve Tobin) arrives on the prowl, the doctor weakens. Once the friend’s husband hires a private detective to determine if she is faithful, Ernst Lubitsch has all the elements for another sparkling romantic comedy with songs. Chevalier’s frequent asides to the audience make the film more direct in its leering innuendo than any other Lubitsch comedy of the ‘30s — a procession of double entendres, hidden meanings, mistaken assumptions and off-camera assignations. Motion Picture Herald wrote, “It may be a bit risqué for some of the smaller towns [although] even these will revel in this fast-moving farce.” This new restoration brings back the original amber and blue tints for night scenes. DIR/PROD Ernst Lubitsch; SCR Samson Raphaelson, from the play “Only a Dream” by Lothar Schmidt. U.S., 1932, b&w, 78 min. NOT RATED
Restored in 4K by Universal Pictures at NBCUniversal StudioPost laboratory, from the 35mm dupe negative and a 35mm composite fine grain.
