DAUGHTER OF THE DRAGON (1931)

DAUGHTER OF THE DRAGON (1931)

Special Features: Intro by film historian Farran Smith Nehme

A Scotland Yard inspector (Sessue Hayakawa) tracks the elusive Fu Manchu to London, where dancer Princess Ling Moy (Anna May Wong) lives unaware that she is the evil mastermind’s long-lost daughter. When Fu Manchu (Swedish American actor Warner Oland) arrives on the scene, his daughter is drawn into his campaign of vengeance. Lavish sets and striking costumes frame a story steeped in the era’s stereotypes, yet Wong and Hayakawa transcend the material, bringing intelligence and gravity to their roles. In Wong’s first Hollywood film after several years of European stardom, she is beautifully costumed in faux qipao gowns; this was Hayakawa’s return to the American screen after acting in several British and French films.
