HOLD YOUR MAN (1933) in 35mm
Special Features: Intro by film historian David Stenn
Fast-talking conman Eddie (Clark Gable) on the run from the police crosses paths with a wisecracking, hard-luck party girl, Ruby (Jean Harlow), in the depths of the Great Depression. Kindred spirits, the pair team up — romantically and professionally — in a world where survival depends on charm and hustle. When a blackmail scheme goes wrong, Ruby is sent to a woman's reformatory, where she fights with other prisoners while plotting her getaway. Crackling with pre-Code energy, the film pairs Harlow’s razor-edged dialogue, glamorous outfits and keen left hook with Gable’s easy toughness and unmistakable chemistry. The Production Code Administration dismissed this as “another somewhat low-toned picture,” but the electricity between Harlow and Gable endures in a well-crafted mix of comedy and melodrama that leads to a beautifully crafted final sequence.
