Adapted from an ancient folk epic, this landmark film, created by Canadian filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk with a nearly all-Inuit cast and crew, was the first feature ever made entirely in the Inuktitut language, an unconventional saga shot on early video over the course of six months above the Arctic Circle. Utterly captivating, ATANARJUAT follows the adventures of a desperate Inuk man who is cast out of his tribe after being wrongly accused of attempted murder. Multigenerational in scope, the film adheres to a humane psychological realism even within its mythological framework.
