PERROS
Special Features: Special Presentation | Post-screening reception sponsored by the Embassy of Uruguay on Sept. 30
In the peak of a hot and sweaty summer in the suburbs of Montevideo, the firmly middle-class Saldañas offer to dog-sit for their well-to-do neighbors, the Pernas, who hand over their keys and the instructions for their alarm without a second thought. Unable to afford their own vacation, the Saldañas decide to enjoy the finer things their neighbors’ house provides, like air conditioning, fancy lotion and creams, recreational drugs and television subscriptions. But when they lose track of the beloved family pup, the Saldañas soon find themselves in over their head — and in an escalating war with their neighbors. A simmering feature debut from Gerardo Minutti, this tense tragicomedy uncovers dark suburban truths about class, jealously and rage. The film won seven prizes at the 2025 Uruguayan Film Critics Association Awards, including Best Film, Best Debut, Best Director and Best Screenplay. –Josh Gardner
