PROJECTO GLOBAL
Special Features: North American Premiere
Though the Carnation Revolution of 1974 toppled Portugal’s 40-year-old dictatorship and ushered in a wave of democracy, the following years were filled with growing pains. In the 1980s, as the new government eschewed the socialist policies of the revolution amidst rampant unemployment and economic recession, the far-left militant group FP25 entered the scene to set the country right: through a violent campaign of bank robberies, assassinations and even the bombing of NATO ships. Filmmaker Ivo M. Ferreira recounts this rich period of Portuguese history via a morally complex and kinetic political thriller akin to those produced by Hollywood in the ‘70s and ‘80s and, more recently, Paul Thomas Anderson’s ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. Centering his story on three members of FP25 — Rosa, Jaime and Queiroz — Ferreira explores the fine line between freedom fighter and terrorist, carefully depicting both the crimes committed by the group and their frequent discussions of their methods, tactics and ethical reservations. Actor Jani Zhao stands out as Rosa, the young mother caught between her desire to enact FP25’s manifesto, “Projecto Global,” and the harsh realities of waging a clandestine war. —Javier Chavez
