[THE DANCE OF THE KOKORRDIT]
The ancestral homeland of the Wounaan people, nestled within the Darién Gap on the border between Panama and Colombia, is under threat from loggers, ranchers and miners. But perhaps the biggest threat is the government that turns a blind eye to the environmental ramifications of these earth-shattering activities that not only have harmed the Wounaan’s way of life but have also chased away their sacred bird, the kokorddit. Unable to rely on government support, Areo, a Wounaan chieftain, sets out to find the missing bird with the help of his niece Ayned, who very emphatically does not want to join her uncle on this journey. Ayned grew up in the city, estranged from Wounaan culture, and is more interested in her cell phone and shopping with her friends than braving the rainforest with Areo. Together, the pair must face wild rivers, sinking mud and human threats to restore spiritual balance to their community. Inspired by the real struggles of the Wounaan people, EL VIAJE DE KOKORRDIT is a celebration of indigenous culture and a call to action to preserve nature and the history of ancestral homelands. —Bridget Sweeney
