EVA
After the sudden death of her daughter-in-law, Eva (Endry Cardeño), a trans woman, must take care of her newborn granddaughter and grieving son, Gustavo (Jancel Romero). Balancing the loss, her queer identity and several shifting relationships is hard enough, but Eva also struggles to connect with Gustavo, who seems detached from his daughter and plans to leave Honduras for the U.S. as soon as possible. A poignant and moving story from Honduran filmmaker William Reyes, EVA depicts the delicate journey of a mother and son towards mutual understanding and the forging of new family bonds. Cardeño, a trans woman herself, gives a raw, tender performance that captures the weight of unexpected responsibility on a woman with her own complicated life. —Bridget Sweeney
