MOUNTAINS OF FIRE
[CORDILLERA DE FUEGO]
After centuries of forced displacement, indigenous communities in Guatemala have settled on new land, persevering by collective action. But when volcanologist Paula (María Mercedes Coroy, IXCANUL) discovers a new volcano forming under the fault lines of these communities, she worries their way of life may be threatened once again. If she wants to ensure their safety, Paula will have to fight against deep-seated corruption and powerful business interests in order to save lives and find a lasting solution for settlement. Adapting the true story of a tragic 2018 volcanic eruption, Guatemala’s most prominent filmmaker, Jayro Bustamante (IXACANUL, LA LLORONA), puts his own spin on the conspiracy thriller to continue his searing investigation into the urgent social issues facing his homeland. –Josh Gardner
