In the mid-1950s, Havana was home to more movie theaters than Paris or New York City combined. Decades later, the city’s once-grand movie palaces are now crumbling, echoing the disillusion and spreading mental health panic gripping Cuban society. Illuminada (Mirtha Ibarra) has worked as an usher for one of these theaters, the Cine Cuba, for over 30 years; the sacred space, which screens all manner of film — from LA DOLCE VITA to Almódovar and Bigas Luna to American classics — serves as a respite from her alcoholic husband and own neuroses. When local officials declare Cine Cuba is to be shut down, Illuminada enlists her fellow employees to create a documentary proving the venue still has value — while confronting her tragic past and unfulfilled dreams of becoming an actress. Filmmaker Jorge Perugorriá (best known as one of the leads in STRAWBERRY AND CHOCOLATE, the first Cuban film to be nominated for an Academy Award®) turns in a charming and poignant exploration of the abuses faced by women in Cuban society and the country’s enduring fascination with cinema. –Javier Chavez
