In 2018, the Cuban government published Decree 349, a law that requires artists to obtain permission from the Cuban culture ministry for any public or private exhibitions. In response, a group of journalists, artists and academics calling themselves the San Isidro Movement formed to protest this restriction. Primarily utilizing cell phone footage taken by those on the ground, this documentary tells the story of a fight against oppression through three key moments in recent Cuban history: the November 2020 hunger strike by Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and his fellow artivists; the spontaneous demonstration in front of the Ministry of Culture later that month; and the historic demonstrations of July 11, 2021, when thousands of Cubans took to the streets to protest against crumbling infrastructure, food shortages and increased authoritarianism. Documentarian Sergio Fernández Borrás’ film is a powerful depiction of a resilient group of people striving for a better life in a country on the brink of total collapse. –Javier Chavez
