DONKEY PRINCESS
Special Features: East Coast Premiere
[PRINCESA BURRO]
Chilean directing duo Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña (THE WOLF HOUSE) take a genre-busting detour into the multiverse in their latest mind-blowingly handcrafted creation. In the long-ago kingdom of Chile, the black plague leaves a path of destruction and death, turning King Arthur into a distraught widower when his wife falls ill and dies, leaving him to care for their small daughter Diana. The king decrees that no one should have to suffer like he has under the auspices of romance, and forbids the plague of love throughout the kingdom. Now grown, Diana dares to defy her father and falls for the dashing Lalo. When he is swiftly expelled from the kingdom, Diana uses a magical bracelet to travel through time and space to find her lost love. Taking loose inspiration from the French fairy tale “Donkeyskin “and its 1970 musical adaptation by Jacques Demy, León and Cociña’s twisted romance is uniquely their own, told fully in live action but with some of their trademark atmospheric animation tricks peppered throughout. As the film traverses from medieval fantasy to retro-futurist science fiction and into the present day, it is bolstered by a haunting score from Jean-Benoît Dunckel of AIR. –Josh Gardner
