THE CONDOR DAUGHTER

Special Features: Q&A with filmmaker Álvaro Olmos Torrico on Sept. 17

[LA HIJA CÓNDOR]
In a remote indigenous community in the Bolivian Andes, the midwives sing ancient Quechuan songs to aid birthing mothers and their newborns. Clara (Marisol Vallejos Montaño), a teenager with a gifted voice, is one such midwife, taught by her adoptive mother, Ana (María Magdalena Sanizo), to carry on the traditions of their people — but Clara has bigger dreams in mind. When she sets off into the big city to pursue a musical career, her community is certain they are now cursed, and they send Ana to bring Clara back and restore harmony. Filmmaker Álvaro Olmos Torrico (producer, THE ONES FROM BELOW, 2023 AFI Latin American Film Festival) crafts a delicate drama about the push and pull between tradition and modernity, led by moving performances from Sanizo and Vallejos Montaño. The cinematography by Nicolás Wong Díaz captures the gorgeous Andean landscape while juxtaposing it against the neon glow of urban life. –Javier Chavez
