THE PHANTOM
Special Features: North American Premiere
[EL FANTASMA]
A scathing art-world satire becomes a nostalgic treatise on death, memory and creation in Ignacio Masllorens and David Lamelas’ playful and often hilarious hybrid docu-fiction produced by beloved indie collective El Pampero Cine (LA FLOR, TRENQUE LAUQUEN). Rocío and Rosario are a dynamic duo, two pretentious upstart filmmakers with a production company. They are commissioned to make a standard bio-doc about late avant-garde artist Rubén Santantonín, who died young and destroyed all his remaining art works. The only catch is that they must collaborate with Santantonín’s contemporary: renowned conceptual artist David Lamelas (playing himself). As they begin to interview subject-matter experts, Lamelas starts planning something much larger in scope than initially discussed, raising the ire of Rocío and Rosario. As he dives deeper into his own memories and the trajectory of his friend’s life, Lamelas starts to question his own motivations. –Josh Gardner
