An ambitious dancer (Joan Crawford) claws her way up from burlesque stripper to Broadway chorus girl; a smitten millionaire (Franchot Tone) offers escape, while a hard-driving dance director (Clark Gable) provides crackling sexual tension. Lavish sets and famed costume designer Adrian’s glittering gowns frame a series of exuberant musical numbers, including Fred Astaire’s screen debut as Joan’s dancing partner. Robert Benchley and the Three Stooges provide comic relief.
