MONSTERS, INC.

Loveable Sulley (John Goodman) and wisecracking Mike (Billy Crystal) are the top scarers at Monsters, Inc., an energy company that harnesses the screams of children to power the city of Monstropolis. It is dangerous work because everyone knows that children are toxic, literally — their touch is supposedly enough to kill a monster. When a little girl nicknamed “Boo” accidentally enters Monstropolis from the human world, chaos erupts until Sulley and Mike discover that her laughter generates more power than her screams. With this discovery in hand, the two pals set out to safely take Boo home before the Child Detection Agency gets their claws on her. The technical wizardry afoot inside Pixar continued with this monstrous movie, and the animators were tasked with a new and greater challenge: animating fur in a realistic manner (Sulley alone has 2,320,413 individual hairs). Combining that cutting-edge animation with a clever, funny and heartwarming script landed the filmmakers a nomination for the first ever Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature — which was ultimately won by fellow computer-animated extravaganza SHREK. Randy Newman, who had composed the scores for Pixar’s three previous releases, won his first Oscar® (Best Original Song, “If I Didn’t Have You”) after 15 previous nominations.
