I LOVE BOOSTERS
Special Features: Advance screening as part of the DC Labor FilmFest: Tues, May 19, 7:00 p.m., featuring a video introduction by filmmaker Boots Riley | Opens Friday, May 22
The latest idiosyncratic film from director Boots Riley is as wide-ranging as his debut, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, but no less ambitious in its aims or pointed in its critique. Corvette (Keke Palmer), an aspiring fashion designer stuck living in a shuttered chicken restaurant, makes ends meet as a booster (someone who steals merchandise and resells it at a discount) with her friends Sade (Naomi Ackie) and Mariah (Taylour Paige). After she repeatedly boosts outfits from stores operated by fashion designer Christie Smith (Demi Moore), Corvette draws the mogul’s ire, setting in motion a chain of events that extends far beyond her Oakland home and into the Chinese factories where the expensive wares are produced. Featuring bright, bold costumes, eye-popping makeup, Looney Tunes–esque gags and sharp editing that together create a visual feast, I LOVE BOOSTERS is a proudly feminist, pro-labor comedy about what can be achieved when the workers of the world unite. DIR/SCR Boots Riley; PROD Aaron Ryder, Andrew Swett, Allison Rose Carter, Jon Read. 2026, U.S., color, 103 min. RATED R
