MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM (1931)
A milestone of queer cinema, MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM is Leontine Sagan’s 1931 screen adaptation of the groundbreaking play by Christa Winsloe. Hertha Thiele stars as Manuela, a sensitive pupil who forms an attachment to a compassionate instructor, Miss von Bernburg (Dorothea Wieck, CRADLE SONG), while at a militaristic boarding school. After performing the role of Don Carlos in the school play, an intoxicated Manuela openly declares her love for Miss von Bernburg, scandalizing the student body and inciting the wrath of the school’s conservative headmistress (Emilia Unda). Later remade in1958 by Géza von Radványi, MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM is a timeless coming-of-age classic and landmark of lesbian cinema that captures the heartache and confusion of a young woman’s sexual awakening.
