ARTISTS AND MODELS (1955)

Special Features: New 4K Restoration

ARTISTS AND MODELS is the first Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis film to be directed by animator-turned-director Frank Tashlin, whose dynamic visual flair, pop-cultural smarts and spoofy sensibility made him one of the duo’s best collaborators. Down on their luck, two roommates — comic book addict Eugene (Lewis) and painter Rick (Martin) — try their hand in the comic book industry, inspired by their new neighbor Abigail’s (Dorothy Malone) success with the “Bat Lady” comic, a character her best friend Bessie (Shirley MacLaine) models for her. Rick falls for Abigail and Bessie falls for Eugene, who is really in love with the “Bat Lady” herself. Shot in glorious VistaVision and featuring eye-popping color schemes, Tashlin’s musical romantic comedy satirizes mid-50s moral panic over the supposedly corrupting influence of comic books, while offering a sublime canvas for Martin and Lewis’ legendary double act. DIR/SCR Frank Tashlin; SCR Herbert Baker, Hal Kanter, from the play “Rock-A-Bye Baby” by Michael Davidson and Norman Lessing; PROD Hal B. Wallis. U.S., 1955, color, 109 min. NOT RATED

Restored in 6K in 2024 by Paramount Pictures at ColorTime laboratory, from the original 35mm VistaVision negative.
