WAITING FOR GUFFMAN
Special Features: 30th Anniversary
For their town’s 150th-anniversary celebration, the residents of Blaine, Missouri, plan to stage the musical revue “Red, White and Blaine,” directed by quirky off-off-off-off-Broadway director Corky St. Clair (Christopher Guest). Corky assembles a crew of collaborators — played by thespians Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Parker Posey and Bob Balaban, among others — as marginally talented as himself. When word spreads that notable theater agent Mort Guffman plans to attend the performance, they scramble to put on a stupendous show because it could just be their ticket out of their Podunk town. Directed by Guest and co-written by Levy — with ample improvisation, of course — WAITING FOR GUFFMAN is one of a number of their riotous mockumentaries (including A MIGHTY WIND and BEST IN SHOW) all about dubiously talented small-town folk itching for their big break.
