THE ANCHORAGE OF TIME
[O ANCORADOURO DO TEMPO]
In Mozambique, Izidine, a young police inspector, is called to investigate the murder of Vasto Excelêncio, the director of a nursing home built within the walls of an old colonial slave fortress. Head nurse Marta insists the investigation should focus on the true crime — the very existence of the nursing home — but Izidine is shocked when all the elderly residents confess to the murder. Each one has motive, given Excelêncio’s abusive treatment of the residents, his staff and even his own wife. With the clock ticking until a helicopter returns to take Izidine home in a week, the detective must unravel the truth when every suspect claims guilt. Filmmaker Sol de Carvalho worked with author Mia Couto to adapt his own novel into this charged exploration of racial identity, domestic violence and the lingering specter of Portugal’s colonial past.
