Rose Byrne gives the fiercest performance of her career in Mary Bronstein’s darkly funny, slightly surreal portrait of a woman battling through daily frustrations as a wife, mother and working professional. Byrne plays Linda, a Montauk, Long Island, psychologist who is solo parenting her young daughter while her cruise-boat captain husband is away at sea. Inverting the old adage that children should be seen but not heard, Linda’s child remains unseen through most of the film, often nearby and just out of frame, but heard, often anxiously complaining. The child is experiencing an feeding disorder, which expensive visits to a clinic have failed to remediate. Linda seeks counseling from a fellow therapist (drolly played by a poker-faced Conan O’Brien), although it similarly yields negative results. A household accident destroys the roof of the family home, necessitating a relocation to a slightly seedy motel, run by night manager James (A$AP Rocky), but instead of finding rest, Linda finds ways to create more drama. Writer/director Bronstein’s visionary portrait of a woman battling hard against ceaseless challenges finds dark humor in its wait-it-gets-worse beats, while Byrne’s anti-heroine tiptoes on the knife’s edge of apostasy from marriage, motherhood and career before discovering a glimmer of well-earned hope.
