BLUE MOON
Two 2026 Academy Award® nominations: Best Actor in a Leading Role (Ethan Hawke) and Best Original Screenplay
BLUE MOON examines a chapter in the life of celebrated Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. Although he previously saw success as one half of the team of Rodgers and Hart, in March of 1943 Lorenz finds himself attending the opening night of Richard Rodgers’ first production with his new collaborator, Oscar Hammerstein II. That production is “Oklahoma!”, and while Hart knows the show will be a smash hit, he leaves early — to drink, to banter with other patrons at the Sardi’s bar and to prepare to put on a brave face and be witty once the triumphant duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein arrive. Richard Linklater masterfully directs this play-like gem of a screenplay by Robert Kaplow, whose novel “Me and Orson Welles” Linklater previously adapted into the 2008 film of the same name. Ethan Hawke (Best Lead Performance, National Society of Film Critics Awards) dives into the role of Hart with gusto, in a performance by turns antic, desperate and heartfelt. Andrew Scott (Best Supporting Performance, 2025 Berlin International Film Festival) impresses as the reticent, watchful Rodgers, and Margaret Qualley shines as Yale student and socialite Elizabeth Weiland, with whom the closeted and much older Hart has become delusionally besotted. DIR/PROD Richard Linklater; SCR Robert Kaplow, inspired by the letters of Lorenz Hart and Elizabeth Weiland; PROD Mike Blizzard, John Sloss. U.S., 2025, color, 100 min. RATED R
