JEREMIAH JOHNSON
Shot on location in the rugged mountains of Utah, this Sydney Pollack-directed wilderness epic stars Robert Redford as Jeremiah Johnson, a Mexican War veteran who turns his back on civilization to live at peace with nature in the mid-1800s. Living within the brutal landscape provides an idyllic life for Jeremiah until his newly formed family is brutally murdered, and the once-gentle man turns vengeful. Co-scripted by John Milius and shot in a wide aspect ratio that captures the mountainous panorama of Utah, this gritty western was a star vehicle for Redford; as Roger Greenspun wrote in his review for the New York Times, “[Redford stars] in a role that must be very real to his own mind and feelings…[He] plays it with a reticence and directness that also seem as much a part of the man as of the performance.” DIR Sydney Pollack; SCR Edward Anhalt, John Milius, from the novels “Mountain Man” by Vardis Fisher and “Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson” by Raymond W. Thorp and Robert Bunker; PROD Joe Wizan. U.S., 1972, color, 116 min. RATED PG
