ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES
Special Features: Intro by Silver Spring-based author, producer and screenwriter George Pelecanos on Jan. 30
On the mean streets of 1920s New York, best pals Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney) and Jerry Connolly (Pat O’Brien) get up to no good. An attempted train robbery gone wrong sends them on very different paths when Rocky is caught by the cops, but Jerry manages to escape. Nearly 20 years later, Rocky is a convicted gangster fresh out of the slammer, while Jerry is a Catholic priest attempting to keep a group of hooligans (played by the Dead End Kids) on the straight and narrow. The supporting cast includes Ann Sheridan as an old flame from the neighborhood and Humphrey Bogart as Rocky’s sleazy lawyer turned adversary. Directed by Michael Curtiz, the film — part gangster picture, part morality tale — features Curtiz’s trademark dynamic imagery with fluid camera movements and dramatic angles, all shot by his frequent collaborator Sol Polito.
