BREATHING UNDERWATER
Special Features: U.S. Premiere | 2026 Oscar® Selection, Luxembourg
[HORS D’HALEINE]
Covered in bruises and having just discovered she is pregnant, Emma (Carla Juri, WETLANDS) finds herself in the hospital, afraid to return home to her husband. The nurses suspect domestic violence — a charge Emma herself is not comfortable accepting — and gently suggest she stay at a women’s shelter until she decides on next steps. Emma reluctantly agrees and finds her new home bursting with life: women, children and kind-hearted staff from all walks of life. Regardless of their differences and distinct traumas, the women forge deep bonds, uplifting each other and allowing Emma to shed the layers of fear and silence she has long held onto. The powerful debut feature from Luxembourgish director Eric Lamhène is a striking social-realist drama that plumbs deep emotional truths to craft a portrait of resilience, community and acceptance. –Josh Gardner
