THE BIRTHDAY PARTY
Special Features: North American Premiere
Greek billionaire Marcos Timoleon (Willem Dafoe) has everything that money can buy, including his own private island on which he is hosting a 25th birthday party for his daughter, Sofia (Vic Carmen Sonne, THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE). The one thing his money cannot afford him though is the return of his only son, who died in a plane crash as a teen and whose death has caused Marcos to keep a tight grasp on every other aspect of his life, including his daughter’s affairs. Ostensibly held in Sofia’s honor, the festivities are mostly populated by Marcos’ friends, enemies and business partners alike, alongside Marcos’ biographer, Ian Forster (Joe Cole), who just so happens to be the not-so-secret partner of Sofia and the father of her unborn child. As the party rages on, Marcos’ machinations come to life and reveal just how twisted the branches of his soul are in director Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s handsomely mounted adaptation of Panos Karnezis’ celebrated novel. –Eli Prysant
