BROKEN VOICES
[SBORMISTR]
Inspired by the real-life Bambini di Praga scandal that occurred in the Czech Republic in the 1990s, BROKEN VOICES is a delicate and emotional drama about abuse of power and loss of innocence. Thirteen-year-old Karolína (an impressive Kateřina Falbrová in her debut) joins a world-famous girls’ choir alongside her older sister, Lucie (Maya Kintera). Though landing a spot in the choir is an achievement on its own, Karolína is eager to prove herself to the stern and exacting choirmaster, Vítězslav Mácha (Juraj Loj), who will select a contingent to join him on an international tour to the United States. Karolína soon draws the ire of her peers — including Lucie, who was previously the center of Macha’s questionable attention — and learns that her triumphs come with a terrible price. Told strictly from Karolína’s point of view, BROKEN VOICES is a deeply empathetic work whose impressionistic images, shot on grainy 16mm film, and enigmatic tale of a troupe of young girls caught by a malevolent presence evokes PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK. –Javier Chavez
