BETTER GO MAD IN THE WILD

Special Features: Special Presentation | North American Premiere | Q&A with filmmaker Miro Remo

[RADĚJI ZEŠÍLET V DIVOČINĚ]
Nestled within the verdant woods of the Šumava forest, eccentric and inseparable twins František and Ondrej Klišík live a harmonious life secluded from the clamor of civilization. Their daily routine includes soothing naps inside a hollowed-out tree trunk, leisurely nude arm-wrestling, caring for the herd of farm animals on their quaint homestead and arguing incessantly yet perpetually reconciling, among even more unconventional pursuits. The foundations of this free-spirited lifestyle soon founder as profound differences in these otherwise identical twins rear their heads: Franta longs for change after living in this same plot of land for decades, while Ondra is firmly rooted to the familiar surroundings. Winner of the prestigious Crystal Globe at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival, BETTER GO MAD IN THE WILD is a whimsical and lyrical portrait of a charismatic duo that invites us to ponder how we should spend the all-too-brief time we have on this earth. Slovak documentarian Miro Remo, working from a script co-written with Aleš Palán (whose own book forms the basis of the story), eschews traditional conventions of the form to imbue the film with a magical realist bent that mirrors not only the eccentricities of its subjects but the equally enchanting land they inhabit, captured via evocative images set to a rousing score that quotes Smetana’s “Moldau” among other symphonic poems. –Javier Chavez
