DOWN AND OUT IN AMERICA
Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature, Lee Grant’s exploration of Reagan-era America takes us from the heartland, where farms that have fed the U.S. for a century are being dismembered by local banks, through to the tent cities of Los Angeles and welfare hotels of New York. This film is a groundbreaking and unforgettable look at life inside an America we have been too quick to forget, as timely and terrifying as ever. DIR Lee Grant; PROD Joseph Feury, Milton Justice. THE STRONGER
A participant in the inaugural AFI Directing Workshop for Woman, Lee Grant made her directorial debut short with this acclaimed adaptation of August Strindberg’s play “The Stronger.” Two rival actresses meet in a gorgeous hotel. One does all the talking, but it is the silence that reveals a shared past and which woman really is “the stronger.” Grant transformed the premises of the AFI Conservatory into a lush 19th-century society hotel for her film starring Susan Strasberg and Dolores Dorn, with cinematography by Andrew Davies and editing by Hal Ashby. (Note adapted from Hope Runs High Films.) DIR/SCR Lee Grant; SCR from the play by August Strindberg; PROD Joseph Feury, Antonio Vellani. U.S., 1976, color, 30 min. NOT RATED
